Everyone knows the three official Core Web Vitals — LCP, INP, CLS. In practice Google weighs a far wider range of signals when ranking a page. Here are the three hidden signals that make the difference in 2026.
1. Time To First Byte (TTFB)
Officially, TTFB is not a Core Web Vital. Unofficially, it is the metric most correlated with ranking. Above 600 ms your LCP is mathematically lost. Host on the edge (Vercel, Cloudflare) — it is the first technical decision.
2. DOM size
More than 1,500 DOM nodes is a silent penalty. Chrome measures it in the CrUX report and it feeds into INP. Many Webflow and WordPress templates generate 3,000 or more. Worth cleaning up.
3. Web Vitals consistency over 28 days
Google does not look at your Lighthouse score at a single moment. It looks at the actual distribution of real page loads by real users over 28 days. One slowdown — a busy season, a CDN outage, a bad deploy — can sink your CrUX score and your ranking for two months.
The right habit: monitor continuously (PageSpeed Insights, Cloudflare Web Analytics, Speedlify) and raise an alert the moment a metric drifts. Performance is not a deliverable — it is a standing SLA.
